Performer at Home, Failure Abroad
Be it Australia or England, Domestic Star Falls Short Overseas
Will He Be Dropped from the Upcoming Series?
There has long been debate over why many domestic stars do not get opportunities in Team India despite stellar performances. Recently, a cricketer even retired after scoring more than 8000 runs in domestic cricket without ever getting a chance in the Indian Test team. On the other hand, some players who do get selected continue to fail in practice matches. We’re talking about Abhimanyu Easwaran.
The Bengal batsman shines only on Indian pitches but struggles overseas. Though he scores heavily in domestic competitions like the Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy, and Challenger Trophy, his bat remains silent during international tours. He was given chances on two foreign tours but couldn’t deliver.
Though not for the senior Team India, Easwaran was picked for the India A team and was given multiple chances in Australia and England. However, he could not meet expectations. Whether it was against pace or spin, he performed well under home conditions but completely failed in foreign ones.
Recently, in two practice matches against England Lions, he had just one half-century in three innings. Despite being selected in the squad for the Test series against England, such performances have left the management disappointed.
While players like Shreyas Iyer and Sarfaraz Khan were not picked for the England series, Easwaran’s repeated failures might open up chances for others. With over 7000 runs in domestic cricket at an average above 48, Easwaran certainly has talent. But with only a few innings left to prove himself, all eyes will be on how he stages a comeback.
