Shreyas Scored 97, but Shashank Didn’t Know

In IPL 2025, on Tuesday, a match took place between Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings. Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab won the match by 11 runs. However, more than the match itself, the final over of Punjab Kings’ innings has been a major topic of discussion because, after the 19th over, Shreyas Iyer was at 97 runs, but he did not get the strike in the last over. Shashank Singh, who had scored 44 runs off 16 balls, played all six balls of the final over. After the match, he made a big revelation about this.

When Punjab’s innings entered the 20th over, Shreyas Iyer was at the non-striker’s end with 97 runs. In Mohammed Siraj’s over, Shashank hit five boundaries, which meant Iyer didn’t get a chance to bat. Shashank, who remained unbeaten on 44, revealed that Iyer never asked him to rotate the strike.

After Punjab Kings’ 11-run victory, Shashank Singh told reporters, “To be honest, I wasn’t looking at the scoreboard. But after hitting a boundary on the first ball, I glanced at it and saw that Shreyas was on 97. I didn’t say anything. Then he came up to me and said, ‘Shashank, don’t worry about my century.’ I was about to ask him whether I should take a single and give him the strike.”

Shashank stated that it takes a big heart and courage to say such a thing, especially in T20 cricket, where centuries are rare, particularly in the IPL. He mentioned that Iyer’s message was clear—to continue attacking the bowlers. He added, “Shreyas told me, ‘Shashank, go for it and try to hit a four or six on every ball.’ This gave me even more confidence. We all know that in the end, cricket is a team game, but being so selfless in that moment is still rare. But Shreyas is one of those players. I have known him for 10-15 years, and he has never changed.”
